They say that to lead is to bring about change. The leader, consumed by a vision, pursues a better future for themselves and others. An influential leader can articulate their vision, inspire and motivate others to support them, and hold steadfastly to that vision in the face of challenge. However, as in all human interaction, leadership has a dark side, and on Peak Performer, I attempt to bring both aspects under the spotlight. Leadership exists within a relationship, and the essays here explore the essence of that relationship and how it operates.

Leadership is a multi-layered and multi-faceted concept that straddles theory and practice and plays a crucial role in bringing about and managing dramatic change. Here are some of the topics we will attempt to explore here on Peak Performer.

  • The Foundations of Leadership

  • Ethics & Leadership

  • Leadership & The Self

  • The Personality of Leadership

  • The Darkside of Leadership

  • Leadership & Decision Making

  • Gender & Leadership

  • Wellbeing & Leadership

Research & Practice-Based Essays

Essays here on The Lead are in-depth and rooted in psychological theory and practice. Much of the available literature on Leadership comes from a business and management perspective, and that has value. However, unless we go to the core of our behaviour, we fail to understand human motivation and the consequences of our actions.

Dwight Eisenhower defined Leadership as;

“The art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it”

This is a loaded statement, one which we will examine in-depth at a later date. However, we can extrapolate, not least from what history tells us, that Eisenhower must have been a persuasive bloke. That said, his definition of propaganda is similar to Bertrand Russell’s 1935 definition.

“They [the young] are then assailed, throughout the rest of their lives, by statements designed to make them believe all sorts of absurd propositions, such as that Blank’s pills cure all ills, that Spitzbergen is warm and fertile, and that Germans eat corpses.”

The Lead will present findings and commentary from the vast literature underpinning leadership theory every week. In this, I hope to offer you a firmly based theoretical approach that you can apply in your organisation of one or, indeed, one thousand.
